I’m Francesco Barracco. I am a research fellow at the Polytechnic of Turin.
I’m involved in the SUN-PERFORM project for the Life Cycle Assessment study. A life cycle assessment involves assessing the environmental impacts of processes, production, and services.
In the SUN-PERFORM project, my involvement in the life cycle is carrying out the first two phases of the SUN-PERFORM’s products life, which are the extraction of the raw materials needed for the production process and then the production process itself.
One of the main issues with biofuels is that they often take a pretty big share of land. So this is obviously an impact to be taken into consideration. It is more obscure than climate change.
People are maybe less familiar with it, but one of the advantages of life cycle assessment is that it analyzes both of those impacts at the same time.
So it ensures that while pursuing a reduction of the climate change, the process does not increase too much the occupation of land or the degradation of land.
So LCA is not just targeted to one type of impact and pollution, but takes into consideration more aspects to ensure a true advancement toward sustainable operations.
